Nau mai, hare mai, welcome to the new Harbourside Nelson

New name, fresh look, same spot on the water

Harbourside Lodge is now Harbourside Nelson, and this spring the place has had a lot more than a new sign. The outside has a new paint scheme. Inside, the rooms have a brighter look, with new lighting and soft furnishings. Breakfast has been rebuilt around Nelson growers and makers. There’s now secure bike storage with charging for guests exploring Nelson’s trails.

What hasn’t changed is where it sits: right on Nelson Marina, with the boats out front.
If you stayed with us before, come and see what we’ve done. If you haven’t, summer’s a great time to start.

What it's like here

Harbourside faces the morning. The sun comes up behind the hills, the water goes still, and the loudest thing around are the skippers going to their boats. By evening the light has swung round, the hills opposite catch the last of it, and on a good night the sky above them turns a glorious pink.

We’re a small team, and most of us have lived here long enough to know what makes Nelson special. Ask us where to buy great craft cheese, which winery to leave till last, or whether the Saturday market is worth getting up early for (it really is).

Whakatū/Nelson

Whakatū, the Māori name for Nelson, is often translated as ‘standing place’ or ‘shelter for canoes’. The geological marvel of the Boulder Bank made this harbour a natural haven long before the first European ships arrived, and early accounts describe fish and produce being traded here. Boats still shelter here, right outside our door. That long history of food coming and going across the wharf is part of why our breakfast table is filled with some of the best of what Nelson grows and makes. It also sits behind the two traditional Māori values we like to work by.

Kaitiakitanga - caring for the environment we live within

Kaitiakitanga is guardianship: caring for the natural world so it’s in good shape for whoever comes next. For us, that starts at the water’s edge. Our bathroom amenities are Antipodes and refillable, so there’s no bag of little plastic bottles heading to landfill. We use natural cleaners wherever it does the job, our power comes from Meridian, and we’re looking at solar. None of it is heroic. The marina is on our doorstep, and we’d like it to stay the way you found it.

Manaakitanga - caring for the people who stay with us

Manaakitanga is hospitality in its fullest sense: generosity, respect and care for everyone who comes through our door. At its heart it’s about people, and it’s something we do well. You’ll find people here who know Nelson and have time for a proper conversation. Tell us what you’re here for, and we’ll help you make the most of it.

The rest is small things done properly. A bed comfortable enough that guests mention it in reviews. Letting you know about the stairs before you arrive, and sorting a ground-floor room or a hand with your bags if you need it.
We know we’ve got it right when you leave more relaxed than you arrived, feeling like you were looked after.
