The Great Taste Trail

Minutes from the start of the Trail

Harbourside is Great Taste Trail accommodation in Nelson at the very start of the ride. The trail begins at the Nelson i-SITE on lower Trafalgar Street, a few minutes from your door along the Maitai River. From there it follows the waterfront, crosses the Waimea Inlet and loops around Tasman's coast, vineyards and orchards.

It's an easy ride for most of its length, mostly grade 1 to 2, so it suits families, e-bikes and anyone who'd rather look at the view than their heart rate. The reward is the food: wineries, craft breweries, seaside cafés, and honesty stalls loaded with whatever's in season. Most people ride it in sections over several days, coming back each night to the same bed. Which is where we come in.

Insider tip: Ride to Māpua for lunch on the wharf, and time it around the ferry from Rabbit Island. Out early, back by four, a glass of local wine at the Anchor next door.
