THE GOLDEN BAY
Drive from Nelson past the Abel Tasman National Park and over the Takaka Hill to the Golden Bay.
The township of Takaka, founded in 1854, is the main business, service and shopping centre in the Golden Bay.
Don’t miss the famous Waikoropupu Springs just out of Takaka, one of the worlds largest fresh water springs with a flow of 7cbm in droughts to 21 cbm per second in wet seasons.
Want to catch your own salmon? Do that at the Anatoki Salmon Farm and get it filleted and smoked. Can you have it any fresher?
Have a cuppa at Port Tarakohe on Jaques Cousteau’s earlier vessel. It’s open when the owner is there.
Enjoy the beautiful golden sands at the beautiful beaches at Totaranui, Pohara, Ligar Bay, Tata Beach and the hidden secret, the Wharariki Beach near Puponga.
A very special experience is a bus tour along the Farewell Spit, out to the lighthouse and the gannet colony. On the return trip jump down the dunes.
Drive along the Aorere valley, past the Devil’s Boots, visit the goldfield or go to the start of the famous Heaphy Track.
Go to the end of the world, past the Westhaven Inlet all the way to Anatori river.
From here it is 4WD only.
There is definitely much more to do and see in the Golden Bay. Just talk to our friendly staff at reception.
