Seventh Anniversary

It’s been already 7 years now that Angelika and Reinhard Gebhard took possession of the Harbourside Motor Lodge in Nelson. After months of negotiation with the previous owner the takeover was February 3rd 2005, at 5pm.

At that time Angelika and Reinhard still lived in Burgthann, a small village close to Nuremberg in the north of Bavaria and the move to New Zealand was still 6 months away.

For these first months and another half year after their immigration they had hired a manager, Michele Buckner, who did a great job in running the motel.

During these months extensive renovations were planned from their German office with the last finally finished in the middle of 2010.

The Harbourside Motor Lodge has been the first Nelson motel to produce its hot water with solar energy. In August 2005 Alternative Power Ltd installed 10 panels on the north-facing roof together with 2 huge water cylinders to store the hot water.  This made the lodge independent from gas supply and provided an additional parking place. For the rare days without sunshine in the sunshine capital of New Zealand there is an electric back up for hot water.

For the comfort of the guests a brand new breakfast room was installed in the old managers apartment. Every morning a complimentary continental breakfast buffet waits for the guests and a full cooked breakfast is available on request at a reasonable price.

Brand new carpets, drapes and bedspreads followed the new yellow and blue colour scheme. For the business orientated guests the rooms now have a spacious working desk and wireless broadband internet.

Over the years all the bathrooms were renovated, most of them tiled in blue and white. Heat lamps in all bathrooms and heated towel rails in most of them give the guests all the comfort they need.

Relocation of the reception and a new managers apartment were the last major works finished in 2010.

Since then new aluminium furniture for the balconies and terraces arrived from overseas, with new cushions added in January 2011.

In January 2011 the Harbourside Motor Lodge became the first motel in Nelson to offer the guests Sky select in each room with more than 40 channels.

In order to keep the high standard there will always be ongoing renovation, such as painting and replacement of equipment.
